Pet Peeves

I was thinking about pet peeves. No, this post will not be a list of pet peeves. It’s about the phrase “pet peeve”.

Of course, it got me thinking about the modifier “pet”. If there is a modifier in a phrase, I am usually amused by changing the modifier and seeing what happens.

In this case, now I am wondering about the wild peeves. And what were the peeves like before they were domesticated? Are there pet peeves that got dumped somewhere and now there is a population of feral peeves roaming the countryside?

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.
