Raising Awareness of Awareness Raising

or, Be Aware – The World Needs More Wares.

or, Be Aware – Be Very, Very Aware.

I heard a radio interview where some lady was “raising awareness” for an issue near and dear to her heart. I don’t begrudge her the chance to make her story known, and I do wish her well in her endeavor to find a cure for her child’s affliction.

But . . .

There comes a point where raising awareness is not going to do anything anymore. We may be at or past that point already. You know, diminishing returns and all…

If all the issues are raising awareness of themselves, then people will be equally aware of all issues and the net effect is no one issue gets more attention than any others. In other words, when everyone is special then no one is special.

Ahh, my favorite movie quote is applicable once again.

Not everyone should be aware of all the issues facing everyone else. There are just too many people and too many issues. We do need to have experts in each area, and I think that’s not a problem currently. But the more issues there are of which to be aware, the less attention or interest each one gets or generates.

Feel free to keep (or start) raising awareness for whatever you want. Just don’t be offended if I tune you out after I hear the phrase “raising awareness”.

But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing.

I totally agree. Have you seen the Seinfeld episode where he goes through the same idea with medicine? You can just have basic Tylenol….it’s all extra strength, or super long lasting…..as if it’s any different from the basic. Now that it’s all super strength…doesn’t that just equal them all out again? Another favorite quote from that movie is “They keep creating new ways to celebrate mediocrity.”

  2. Burrill Says:

Yes please thank you. I’M SO TIRED OF HAVING MY AWARENESS RAISED. It’s such a pointless and lazy way of tricking yourself into thinking you’re doing something when, in fact, you’re not actually contributing anything worthwhile to your cause: awareness is not money, expertise, or volunteering. Do something or do nothing, but don’t talk at me to make yourself feel like you’re doing something. That just irritates me and, quite frankly, makes me less sympathetic to your cause.

So, to give fair warning: if you try to raise my awareness about your cause, you will succeed in raising my awareness to the level at which I can be fully aware that I’m going to ignore your cause. If that’s what you want, then by all means, try to raise my awareness.

Amen to Burrill. I have always wondered what “awareness” accomplished. “Aware” rhymes with “care” but similarity ends there. What is so noteworthy or celebratory about adding a tiny-bit-of-info to my already crowded brain? I am AWARE–Yay Me!!!!!

Began to think, though…as Christians, don’t we often play this game? We hear a prayer request, a need…and do nothing. “I’d appreciate prayers for my sister”, we are asked. “Ah, yes,” we answer gravely, “I heard about that.” Well, SO? Big deal! Are we praying? How easily I fall for this cheap imitation.
