Vacation Recap, Lake Erie, Part 2

We took a week to circle Lake Erie. We never visited Lake Erie itself, just a few interesting points.

Day 2

Drive to Old Fort Niagara. We crossed over the Rainbow Bridge into New York. The US border patrol was more intense than the Canadians were the day before. I was not prepared for the automatic photo, so it was probably even worse than my passport photo. But I didn’t get to see it. Another extra thing the US did was have me roll down the kids’ window so they could see the kids clearly. And the US people must have more paperwork to do, because they held our documents for a few minutes while they typed in a bunch of things. But we got through there and headed north to Lake Ontario, to the point where Old Fort Niagara is.

Upon arriving at the state park that houses Old Fort Niagara, we stopped at the beach. We weren’t really prepared for the water (i.e. no swimsuits), but we let the kids play on the beach anyway. That’s risky, since usually when we do that they end up soaking wet because they can’t help but go into the water. But they were good and stayed on the beach. It was a rocky beach, so the main activity was throwing rocks into Lake Ontario.

Then we went on the fort. We walked around the grounds, wandering from building to building. The buildings were interesting because there aren’t many buildings in the US that date back to the 1600s.

We caught a little bit of the historical talk – some guy dressed in clothing representative of the old days and describing how battles worked and all the deficiencies of muskets.

I’d recommend it. The kids seemed to like it. There was plenty of room to run around and lots of places to explore and the occasional cannon or musket being fired.

We left there around lunchtime, and lunch consisted of snacky-type food in the van on our way to Rochester.

Moreover, he built cities in the hill country of Judah, and he built fortresses and towers on the wooded hills.
