Political Ad Volume

One of the old jokes I like is an exchange between two people at a company, I assume they’re in the sales department or something. The punchline is “We lose money on every sale, but we make it up in volume!”

My brother, and anyone else who takes finances seriously, gets annoyed at the joke because it doesn’t work like that in real life. But that’s what makes it funny. I suppose I would feel the same way about a joke about software or electronics that got some technical detail wrong.

Anyway, I was reminded of the joke after the last several days of mail being nothing but political flyers. It’s hard to imagine those mailings actually work, in combination with all the TV and radio ads, and text messages.

It’s like the campaign managers are looking at all the ads they send out, and are thinking “We annoy people with every ad, but it’s okay because we’ll make it up in volume!”

It came about when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him, that his soul was annoyed to death.
