All-Haiku Bowl Results, 2021

Okay, okay, it is 2022 at this point, but the results are headlines as 2021 because they match with the 2021 predictions made in 2021 for the 2021 season. Also, the results are not all-haiku, just the predictions were. A more accurate title would be “Results for the All-Haiku Predictions made in 2021”.

Before the bowl games commenced for this past college football season, I made some predictions and some more predictions. Here, for your reading enjoyment, is the tally of those predictions. Note that the results are not in haiku form, in contrast to the predictions.

And here are the results of the various forecasting methodologies (see the first year for description of the methodologies) (also, use the word methodologies if you want to sound important; methods would work just as well and is shorter) :

  • Some Blog Site picks were 16-22 (much worse than last year)
  • CBS120 picks were 24-14 (much better than last year)

I don’t think it was right for a team that won only 5 games to get into the playoffs, but such was 2021.

Conferences

Since the strength of the conference has something to do with the results, I thought I would tally each conference’s bowl game record for the 2021 (and the first bit of 2022) season. And it looks like a bunch of other places are pitting the conference records against each other too this year.

  • AAC: 3-1
  • ACC: 2-4
  • Big 10: 6-4
  • Big 12: 5-2
  • Independent: 2-2
  • MAC: 2-5
  • MW: 5-1
  • PAC12: 0-5
  • SEC: 4*-8*
  • Sun Belt: 3-1
  • USA: 3-5

* additional win/loss due to playoff + championship game

So the best conference was the Mountain West (they won 83% of their bowl games) and the worst was the PAC12 (at 0 %).

Or maybe the Sun Belt and AAC were the worst conferences because they sent the fewest teams (4) to bowl games this year.

The SEC was a mixed bag – they had the most teams, a losing percentage, and the overall champion. Having a poor overall bowl record but also the two championship-game teams indicates a high level of inequality of the schools in the conference.

Given the strength of the Big 12 showing in bowl games, that says (to me at least) that they should have been represented in the playoffs. And Mountain West.

Next year: playoffs again! Maybe more playoffs! And more players sitting out of the non-playoff games!

And Judah was defeated by Israel, and they fled, every man to his tent.
